For decades, people across the ROK (South Korea) have resisted the presence and the expansion of U.S. military bases on their land. From farmers and students to elders and union organizers, Koreans across all backgrounds have united to fight the political, economic, environmental, and social harms of U.S. military occupation. These struggles are not just historical; they are deeply rooted in places like  Soseongri, Gangjeong (Jeju Island), Pyeongtaek, and Seoul. This workshop will explore the history, key sites, and current resistance movements, highlighting the courage and resilience of those standing against militarized occupation.

For over two decades, Nodutdol organized delegations to the DPRK (North Korea) through the Korea Exposure and Education Program - DPRK (KEEP-D). This workshop features Nodutdol organizers and past KEEP-D participants who will share stories and insights into social, economic, and organizational life in the DPRK. Join this workshop to learn how exposure trips and people-to-people connections remain important methods of political conscientization among those engaged in resistance and national liberation struggles in their homeland.

Legislative advocacy is one tool of many to engage in the work of social change. How can we harness and organize people power in the U.S. to build successful campaigns for Korean liberation? What is the existing U.S. legislative and policy landscape, and how can we best apply pressure to advance our goals? Where can we target our collective energy to make the most impact at local, state, and federal levels? This workshop panel features organizers, advocates, and policy analysts who will share lessons learned from grassroots campaigns and legislative advocacy across different issue areas.

The Role of Advocacy in the Korean Liberation Movement

Sanctions are silent killers. They suffocate the economy of a sovereign nation and turn the people against their governments. They are one of the primary tools used by imperialist powers to punish any nations that dared to stand up to them or fight for their own independence. In places like Iran, the DPRK, and Zimbabwe, sanctions have caused detrimental harm and loss of human life. However, despite the imposition of these conditions, these nations have found ways to defy imperialists’ demands and sustain the lives of their people. This workshop brings together experts on Iran, the DPRK, and Zimbabwe to discuss the effect of sanctions and how these nations thrive despite sanctions.

The U.S. is ramping up its imperialist aggression in the Indo-Pacific: forming new military alliances resembling an Asian NATO, inflaming tensions in the Taiwan Strait, fortifying bases in the Philippines, and escalating aggression on the Korean peninsula. These actions aim to target China and assert U.S. dominance in the Indo-Pacific region, threatening the sovereignty of nations and escalating the risk of war. Amid these rising tensions, what are the tasks of anti-imperialist and national liberation movements today? This panel will analyze the current state of affairs across the Indo-Pacific and explore tactical and strategic objectives for our movement today.

Grounded in experience and sharp analysis, this panel connects Korea’s anti-imperialist fight to the broader movement for liberation everywhere.

This networking session is for youth and students interested in building movement power on their campuses and in their communities. Attendees will engage in structured activities, connect with other organizers, and hear from a range  of organizations working to build the student movement.

Planting the Seeds of the Student Movement

Students:

Approximately 1 out of 10 Koreans in the U.S. are adoptees, and many in our diaspora are of mixed heritage. Korean diasporic communities span the world – including in Japan, China, and throughout Latin America. Many Koreans in the U.S. have roots in these transnational lineages. This networking session offers a space for adoptees and mixed diaspora Koreans to connect across regions, reflect on the conditions of U.S. imperialism that have shaped our experiences in the diaspora, and discuss how we can progress our struggle beyond politics of identity and belonging – toward building a united, anti-imperialist front.

The DPRK (North Korea) remains one of the most vilified and misunderstood countries in the world. In recent years, U.S. and ROK aggression has intensified, exacerbating military tensions on the Korean Peninsula. Now more than ever, it’s essential to understand the true history of the DPRK and to challenge the misinformation that fuels imperialist narratives. This panel features firsthand insights and experiences from the DPRK, highlighting the country’s enduring struggle against imperialism, and clarifying its place in the broader fight for liberation.

The Long Revolution of the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea

Hear directly from grassroots organizers from the ROK as they share insights from active struggles across the country. Representatives from the Korean Confederation of Trade Unions (KCTU), the Peasants Association, and other frontline movements will speak about the challenges they face and the strategies they’re building on the ground in the fight against U.S. imperialism.

Mapping the Front:

Before the Vietnam War galvanized the anti-war movement in the United States, the Korean War sparked one of the earliest anti-imperialist, anti-war movements. As early as 1950, tens of thousands protested U.S. intervention in Korea – many of them led by Black communists and civil rights leaders. These protests didn’t just shape the movement in the U.S. – they echoed around the world, in countries like France, Germany, Iran, Cuba, and more. This workshop sheds light on this forgotten history of Korean War-era resistance and reclaims its foundational role in launching a global anti-war movement.

The Forgotten Anti-War Movement of the 1950s

Before Vietnam There Was Korea:

From the Gwangju Commune to the Popular University for Palestine, students have long  been on the front lines of anti-imperialist struggle.  As our universities continue to serve and further U.S. imperialism, student movements have a duty to challenge these institutions and imagine alternatives rooted in people, not war and oppression. This intergenerational panel features organizers who have helped build and sustain student movements in Korea and the diaspora – offering insights into the power of student-led resistance, past and present.

Korean Students Then and Now in the Struggle Against Empire

From Memory to Movement:

To tell revolutionary stories, we need revolutionary archives. But what does it mean for archives to be revolutionary? This session will consider how histories of Korean self-determination and anti-imperialism are preserved, exhibited, and narrated in the diaspora. Collecting archival materials, in order to engage and process them, requires discipline and commitment to the belief that a future of liberation is near and possible. Join us as we discuss lessons and reflections from Nodutdol’s archive and anti-imperialist organizing struggles in the Korean diaspora.

Revolutionary Archives:

Film has long been a powerful tool in movements: shaping consciousness, breaking silences, and building solidarity. In the struggle for Korean liberation, filmmakers have documented resistance to U.S. imperialism, challenged dominant media narratives, and amplified the voices of those directly impacted. This panel brings together filmmakers who have used film as a weapon to show the systems and human costs of imperialism in Korea.

Seeing, Hearing, and Feeling:

The United States stands at the core of the global imperialist system, serving as the primary obstacle to national liberation movements around the world. As anti-imperialists organizing within the heart of the empire, the question is urgent: How do we build principled, effective solidarity across national liberation struggles both internationally and here at home? This panel will explore the common threads linking various national liberation movements fighting U.S. imperialism today, and explore how, from within the belly of the beast, we can create a vision for liberation.

July 27th is Armistice Day – the day the US and North Korea signed a ceasefire agreement for the Korean War that remains in effect today. Over 70 years since the signing of the armistice, the war continues and the Korean people still do not have true sovereignty.
